Join Napier City Council in a hands-on role helping keep our city’s stormwater and wastewater networks working as they should. As a Drainage Serviceperson, you’ll be involved in maintaining, repairing and upgrading the infrastructure our community relies on every day.

We’re looking for someone with experience in drainage, civil construction, utilities or a similar hands-on environment who can bring practical skills and confidence to the role.

While experience is our preference, we’re also open to someone earlier in their career who has a strong practical background, the right attitude and is motivated to develop their skills in drainage.

Working alongside an experienced team, you’ll be involved in planned and reactive maintenance, clearing blockages, repairing faults, new connections and network renewals. It’s physical, varied work where you’ll need to think practically, work safely and be ready to respond when unexpected issues arise.

Te Āheinga - The Opportunity

• Maintain and repair Napier’s stormwater and wastewater networks to keep them safe, reliable and free-flowing.

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance, including clearing blockages, identifying faults and completing repairs.

• Carry out new and planned works including connections, renewals and network upgrades.

• Operate plant, tools and equipment to repair and construct drainage and civil infrastructure.

• Work independently and alongside an experienced team to get the job done safely and efficiently.

• Respond to customer requests promptly and professionally.

• Be available for rostered call-outs and respond to urgent drainage issues when required.

He kōrero mōhou - About You

• Experience in drainage, civil construction, utilities, maintenance or a similar hands-on environment is preferred.

• A relevant infrastructure, pipeline or drainage qualification is an advantage, or a willingness to work towards one.

• Confident using hand and power tools, with experience operating small plant or machinery desirable.

• Practical, reliable and safety-focused, with the ability to problem-solve on the job.

• A team player who can also work independently and show initiative.

• Physically fit and comfortable working in a range of outdoor and operational environments, including confined spaces.

• Hold a full driver’s licence, with heavy vehicle, WTR or other relevant licences an advantage.

This is a permanent, full time role working 42.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday. You’ll be based out of Napier City Council’s operational depot in Onekawa, but spend much of your time working on the network across the city.

The hourly rate for this role is between $30.46 - $32.40 (plus KiwiSaver if eligible), with the final offer depending on your skills and experience.

However, we welcome Trainee's where these positions sit between $28.68 - $29.90 (plus kiwisaver)
