As a Refuse Compactor Operator, you’ll play a hands-on role in maintaining public spaces, collecting and transporting waste, and supporting the overall health and appearance of Napier. This is an essential position where your work directly impacts the community every day.
Te Āheinga - The Opportunity
- Operate compactor vehicles to collect and dispose of public waste safely and efficiently.
- Maintain cleanliness in streets, parks, and public areas.
- Respond to environmental issues, including litter, graffiti, and illegal dumping.
- Work as part of a supportive team, engaging positively with the public while maintaining a strong focus on health and safety.
He kōrero mōhou - About You
- Hold a current HT driver’s license and have previous truck driving experience.
- Experience in rubbish collection, cleaning, or labouring roles.
- Able to follow instructions, communicate clearly, and use maps/street plans.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and respectful when interacting with the public.
- Comfortable working independently and handling challenging conditions, including unpleasant smells.
- Familiarity with health and safety protocols is desirable.

This is a permanent, full time opportunity working 42.5 hours a week, Monday-Friday. You will be based out of our operational site in Onekawa, Napier, but spend a majority of your time working across Napier’s public spaces.
The hourly rate for this role is between $28.90 and $31.40, depending on your skills and experience.
