Napier City Council has an opportunity for a qualified and customer-focused Plumbing and Drainage Inspections Lead to join our Building Consents team.

This is a hands-on inspections role with a specialist focus on plumbing and drainage. Alongside undertaking inspections and certification activities, you’ll be a source of technical advice for the team, helping support consistent decisions, quality outcomes and a positive experience for our customers.

You’ll bring sound technical knowledge, practical experience and the confidence to provide trusted advice on plumbing and drainage matters. This role would suit someone who enjoys remaining hands-on while sharing their specialist knowledge to support consistent outcomes across the team.

Te Āheinga - The Opportunity

As our Plumbing and Drainage Inspections Lead, some of your key responsibilities will include:

• Undertaking plumbing and drainage inspections to ensure work complies with the New Zealand Building Code.

• Providing specialist technical advice on plumbing and drainage matters.

• Sharing technical knowledge and practical guidance with Building Consents Officers when required.

• Issuing code compliance certificates, certificates for public use and certificates of acceptance.

• Supporting Council to meet its responsibilities under the Building Act and Building Consent Authority accreditation standards.

• Maintaining current knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, technical standards and industry practice.

• Building positive relationships with customers, industry professionals and internal teams.

• Assisting with swimming pool inspections, building warrant of fitness audits and complaint investigations when required.

He kōrero mōhou - About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A qualification that meets Regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006; or a relevant construction industry trade qualification and a commitment to obtaining a Regulation 18-compliant qualification.

• Previous Building Consent Authority experience and/or 9–10 years’ practical experience in the construction industry.

• A broad understanding of the Building Act and New Zealand Building Code.

• The ability to share technical knowledge and provide practical guidance to colleagues.

• Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise a substantial workload and meet statutory deadlines.

• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

• Clear written communication and accurate record-keeping skills.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work positively with a wide range of people.

• A professional and customer-focused approach.

• Sound computer and related technology skills.

• A current driver’s licence.

The ability to undertake both general building and plumbing and drainage functions would be an advantage.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity working 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. You will be based in Napier.

The annual salary package for this role is between $86,941 - $97,169 (including KiwiSaver) with the final offer depending on your skills and experience.
