Environmental Officer
Play a hands-on role in protecting Napier’s environment supporting water quality, compliance, and the wellbeing of our community.
This is a practical, purpose-driven role where the work you do directly contributes to the health of Napier’s environment. As an Environmental Officer, you’ll support the monitoring and management of stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water systems helping ensure we meet our regulatory responsibilities while protecting our natural surroundings.
You’ll be out in the field as well as behind the data collecting samples, supporting investigations, and working alongside a range of teams and stakeholders. Whether it’s responding to environmental incidents, contributing to compliance work, or helping improve how we do things, this role offers variety, responsibility, and the chance to make a real difference.
Te Āheinga - The Opportunity
Get involved in environmental monitoring and sampling across Napier’s water systems
Support compliance and investigation work under resource consents and bylaws
Keep data accurate and up to date, and contribute to reporting and insights
Provide practical environmental input into projects, consents, and day-to-day operations
Be part of incident response and enforcement activities, including an on-call roster
Build strong working relationships across Council, with regulators, and within the community
He kōrero mōhou - About You
A relevant qualification in environmental science, resource management, engineering, or a related field
Around two years’ experience in a similar environmental, compliance, or local government role
A practical, organised approach with strong attention to detail
Comfortable communicating with a range of people and writing clear, straightforward reports
Able to work independently while also being a supportive and reliable team member
Confident using systems like MS Office, with a current NZ driver’s licence

This is a permanent, full time opportunity working 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. You will be based in Napier.
The annual salary package for this role is $79,091 - $93,048 (including KiwiSaver), with the final offer depending on your skills and experience.
