Fitness Team Member (Casual)
Join a passionate team that’s all about helping people move better, feel stronger, and enjoy their fitness journey
Are you enthusiastic about fitness and keen to have a real impact? Napier City Council is seeking a motivated and skilled fitness professional to join our dynamic Fitness Team in a casual capacity.
This is an opportunity to work in a lively, people-focused environment where no two days are the same. As a Fitness Team Member, you’ll be central to creating outstanding fitness experiences for our diverse community, encouraging and supporting members as they work towards their goals.
Become part of a welcoming, forward-thinking team with ambitious goals — where you won’t need to rent space for your PT sessions, and where a supportive Team and Manager will back your development and growth. Hours may fall during the week or on weekends, so flexibility to work when needed is essential.

Deliver engaging and results-driven fitness experiences, including group classes, HIIT, circuit training and small group training.
Take ownership of session delivery from start to finish — preparing equipment, running sessions smoothly and on time, and ensuring spaces are reset, clean, and ready for the next users.
Actively supervise the fitness facilities to maintain a safe, professional, and positive experience for all members, and make sure the gym is always in tip top shape.
Build strong connections with the wider team through clear communication with reception and leadership, responding confidently to issues and escalating emergencies when needed.
He kōrero mōhou - About You
Hold, or be actively working towards, Personal Training and/or Group Fitness qualifications.
Hold a current First Aid Certificate and confidently respond to emergency situations.
Sound knowledge of fitness equipment and exercise techniques.
Excellent communication and people skills.
Availability to work a variety of shifts such as early morning, evenings and weekends.
Previous experience in the fitness industry is advantageous.
Open to developing new skills and tools such as working around fitness in the water, fitness challenges, social media activities and other additional fitness industry ideas
This is a casual opportunity with flexible, as-needed hours — ideal if you’re looking to fit work around other commitments. You'll be based at the gym in Ocean Spa on Napier's iconic Marine Parade.
The hourly rate for this role is between $28.70 - $33.80 per hour (including KiwiSaver) PLUS RESPONSIBILITY ALLOWANCES ($11 – 15p/h for PT, $24 - $50 p/h for group fitness)
Applications for this role close on 27 February 2026, however due to the highly competitive employment market we will be interviewing applications as we receive them and may close the role when we have found the right person. Please do not delay in making your application.
