Are you passionate about creating safer, more connected communities? As a Napier Assist Officer/ Āwhina Tāngata, you'll be at the forefront of enhancing public safety and preventing anti-social behaviour in our vibrant city. Through active patrolling and vigilant CCTV monitoring, you'll play a crucial role in deterring incidents and ensuring a secure environment for all.
Beyond security, you'll act as a friendly face of Napier, fostering positive interactions with businesses, residents, and visitors alike. Your role will involve proactive engagement, helping to create a welcoming atmosphere and providing support where needed. Whether it's de-escalating situations or minimising nuisance behaviours, your presence will make a tangible difference in maintaining Napier's reputation as a safe and enjoyable place to live and visit.
Collaboration is key in our work. You'll work closely with the Police and other support agencies, ensuring a coordinated approach to city safety and livability.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Complete incident reports and maintain accurate records, including notes, photos, and observations.
- Report graffiti or required repairs to council assets and services.
- Engage with the public, businesses, and users of commercial and public spaces.
- Monitor and operate surveillance cameras following best practices and procedures.
- Identify public safety incidents and coordinate appropriate responses.
- Handle enquiries about Napier Assist and CCTV footage requests.
- Adhere to privacy, CCTV policies, and security protocols.
- Promote community safety, manaakitanga, and āwhina.
- Act professionally with empathy and respect, assessing needs appropriately.
- Apply council bylaws and policies using a positive, graduated response approach.
- Gather and record evidence ethically and provide formal court statements when required.
- Maintain professional communication and assist council staff and agencies as needed.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Minimum NCEA Level 3 or equivalent (tertiary qualification preferred).
- At least 5 years’ experience in community, social services, or a related sector.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with diverse groups.
- Conflict management experience and ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Sound judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Competence in Microsoft Office and general computer use, including mobile devices.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Strong written skills for reporting and data entry.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Availability for shift work, including 24/7 roster coverage.
This is a full-time opportunity which will require you to be available weekends & public holidays (on a roster basis across any day from Monday to Sunday) We will be interviewing applications as we receive them and may close the role when we have found the right person.
