In this role, you’ll be at the heart of essential operations, safely handling hydro excavation and vacuum trucks to unearth underground utilities, remove debris, and maintain vital infrastructure. From servicing wastewater plants and pump stations to ensuring pristine public facilities, your work will make a tangible impact.
With a commitment to safety, professionalism, and environmental care, you’ll uphold Council policies, bylaws, and resource consent requirements while following best practices to the letter.
Please note this role is 42.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday) however you will need to be available to respond to call-outs after-hours on standby, on a rostered basis.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operate hydro excavation and vacuum trucks to safely excavate and remove soil, mud, and debris.
- Use hydro excavation for non-destructive digging to locate underground utilities like pipes, cables, and conduits.
- Transport and dispose of waste following regulations and company policies.
- Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment to ensure safety and efficiency, reducing downtime through regular and preventative maintenance.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and clients about job progress, site conditions, and any issues.
- Manage job bookings by coordinating with team leaders and stakeholders, prioritizing tasks for the hydro vacuum truck.
- Assess job requirements to allocate the right time, equipment, and resources, avoiding delays and ensuring timely job completion.
- Ensure the truck is fully utilised whenever possible, accounting for preventive maintenance and repair times, to maximise efficiency and availability.
- Perform the duties of the ‘competent person’, supervising the site from initiation to completion of the confined space entry.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- NCEA Level 3 qualification
- Full Class 1 and 4 driver’s licenses
- Dangerous Goods license
- At least 3 years’ experience operating heavy trucks and machinery in civil construction
- Understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, including pumps, valves, and controls
- Strong mechanical skills and hands-on experience
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Physically fit, able to lift heavy objects, work in confined spaces, and handle hazardous materials like wastewater
- Capable of working independently and as part of a team
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on safety
- Skilled in record-keeping and reporting
